Dr. Sylvia Blyden, a prominent political figure in Sierra Leone has issued an ultimatum to Dr. Samura Kamara, the leader and presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC) party.
The ultimatum demands that Dr. Kamara instruct APC Members of Parliament (MPs) to resume their seats in Parliament immediately. If he fails to comply, Dr. Blyden threatens to take the matter to the Supreme Court for a review of his de-facto leadership.
“An ultimatum has been issued by me for Dr. Samura Kamara to send our APC MPs to go sit in Parliament or I will file for Supreme Court to examine his de-facto Leadership!” Dr. Blyden posted on her social media page.
The current standoff within the APC stems from the controversial June 24th general elections results announced by the Elections Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). Following the contentious outcome, the APC made a decision to boycott any form of governance, including Parliament, in protest. They demanded the ECSL to release election results by polling centers to ensure transparency and accuracy.
In a recent address to the elected APC MPs in Makeni city, Bombali District, Dr. Kamara expressed gratitude for their unwavering commitment to the party’s decision.
He emphasized the importance of trusting the process and standing united to restore democracy, rule of law, transparency, accountability, social justice, and constitutionality.
The absence of APC MPs during the State Opening of the 6th Parliament of the Second Republic has drawn attention to the ongoing political impasse. Notable absentees, with the exception of Mohamed Bangura who defied the party stance, underscore the APC’s determination to uphold their boycott in protest of the election results.
President Julius Maada Bio mwas outlining his plans and vision for the nation during the parliamentary session, primarily attended by members of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and Paramount Chiefs. However, the absence of the APC MPs continues to highlight the deep-rooted divisions within the country’s political landscape.
As the parliamentary sessions for the Second Republic commence, the nation watches closely to see how the APC’s demands will be addressed and whether Dr. Blyden’s ultimatum will prompt a resolution to the ongoing political deadlock.
