Freetown, Sierra Leone — Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, the National Chairman of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party.
Mansaray, a veteran politician and longtime APC stalwart, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026. Details about the cause of death have not yet been officially disclosed.
In a statement shared on social media, President Bio described the loss as a significant blow to the nation.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of the National Chairman of the All People’s Congress, Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray. Sierra Leone has lost a respected statesman and a great politician whose contributions to our nation’s democratic journey will never be forgotten,” Bio said.
The President extended condolences on behalf of the government, the people of Sierra Leone, and his ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP): “On behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone, and the Sierra Leone People’s Party, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, the APC, and all who mourn his demise. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray was a prominent figure in Sierra Leonean politics for decades. A businessman with roots in the insurance sector, where he worked at the Sierra Leone National Insurance Company, he held key ministerial positions under former President Ernest Bai Koroma, including Minister of Labour (2007–2010) and Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources.
He rose through the APC ranks, serving as deputy leader before becoming National Chairman. Mansaray was known for his loyalty to the party, having been involved since its youth structures, and maintained close ties with Koroma. His leadership came during a challenging period for the APC following its 2018 and 2023 electoral defeats to Bio’s SLPP.
Mansaray had faced health challenges in recent years, including treatment in India, which sparked earlier rumors about his condition that the party had previously denied.
