Freetown, Sierra Leone — Bai Mamoud Bangura, the National Organising Secretary of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has been granted bail due to deteriorating health conditions.
Justice Komba Kamanda made the decision to release Bangura on bail so he could receive urgent medical attention.
Despite his release, the treason proceedings against him will continue.
Bangura was arrested last November at his home by armed police in connection to an alleged attempted coup.
According to Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, the arrest followed the discovery of military gear and evidence indicating the harboring of a suspected fugitive involved in the 26 November 2023 coup attempt at Bangura’s residence in Freetown.
The police operation, which took place on 30 November 2023, led to the detention of both Bangura and the alleged fugitive at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters for further investigation.
Minister Bah stated that the findings at Bangura’s residence were critical to the ongoing investigation into the attempted coup.
