Abuja, Nigeria – During the recent ECOWAS Parliamentary plenary session in Abuja, Honourable Abdul Kargbo, the Opposition Parliamentary Leader of Sierra Leone, made a passionate appeal to Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Welfare.
Kargbo urged ECOWAS to prioritize the rehabilitation of kush victims in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. Kush remains a critical substance that continues to ruin the lives of countless youths.
Highlighting the severe impact of kush addiction, Honourable Kargbo recounted the case of a 25-year-old Sierra Leonean addict who spends $10 daily on the drug, in a nation where the average annual income is below $500.
He also referenced a tragic incident where 32 kush victims were buried in a single day in Sierra Leone.
These grave issues led to a national emergency declaration on kush in Sierra Leone.
Kargbo stressed the immediate necessity for ECOWAS to allocate funds for the rehabilitation of kush victims in its upcoming budget, covering Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia.
