In a recent parliamentary session held on August 17, 2023, Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu, the Speaker of Sierra Leone’s Parliament, addressed the ongoing absence of Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) who have not yet taken their oaths of office.
Bundu asserted that these MPs, by failing to assume their seats, have violated their contractual obligation to their constituents. He emphasized that the MPs voluntarily chose to contest in the elections and made promises to their supporters, demonstrating their commitment to representation.
Dr. Bundu highlighted the importance of Parliament as a platform for MPs to address their grievances and interests, stressing that the law of the land must be upheld.
Referring to Section 94 of the 1991 Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Orders, he noted that absenteeism is regulated and that the proceedings remain valid despite MP absences.
He urged the absent MPs to exercise their right to representation and reassured them of the protection afforded by the parliamentary institution.
Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Tawa Conteh further emphasized the constitutional and legal responsibilities of MPs, underscoring that their actions should align with the wishes of the people.
Conteh referred to the moral obligation for MPs to participate in parliamentary functions, asserting that their representation transcends party affiliations.
A noteworthy factor is that fifty-two out of fifty-four Opposition All People’s Congress MPs have yet to take their oaths of office. This decision was conveyed to the public through a press release, indicating the party’s boycott of various governance functions, including the legislature and local council, following concerns about the conduct of the June 24 General Elections.
