Freetown, June 18, 2024 – Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC) has announced its decision to rejoin the Tripartite Committee, signaling a renewed commitment to electoral justice and democratic principles.
This decision comes despite what the party describes as significant challenges and a lack of cooperation from the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government and the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).
“Today, we reaffirm our dedication to the principles of democracy and transparency,” the party stated in a press release signed by Lansana Dumbuya, National Secretary General for the APC.
“Despite the adversities we face, our participation in the Tripartite Committee is crucial in pursuing truth and justice.”
The APC has expressed ongoing concerns about the ECSL’s handling of the June 24, 2023, elections.
“The ECSL has repeatedly failed to produce or verify the disaggregated data from the elections,” they continued. “Their refusal to provide this critical information suggests either the data does not exist or it contradicts the figures announced by ECSL’s Chairman Mohamed Konneh.”
The party claims that credible evidence of over-voting and other discrepancies highlights the fictitious nature of the announced results.
“Everyone involved in the June 2023 elections, except for the ECSL, is aware that the results were fabricated,” APC emphasized. “Our determination to seek truth and justice must prevail over the blatant insolence of the ECSL and its collaborators.”
Despite the SLPP government’s alleged lack of willingness to participate and attempts to obstruct the process, the APC remains resolute.
“Our commitment to transparency and accountability remains steadfast,” they added. “After consultations with ECOWAS and AU mediators who visited our office today, our contingent will continue to engage in the Tripartite Committee to present our final report.”
The APC has also addressed its supporters, explaining the temporary suspension of their involvement in the Tripartite Committee.
“This strategic move highlighted the significant challenges we face in obtaining necessary data and verification documents from the ECSL,” APC explained. “Our temporary withdrawal drew national and international attention to the ECSL’s lack of transparency and their unwillingness to cooperate.”
“We thank our loyal supporters for their unwavering support and patience during this time,” they concluded.
“The APC is committed to fighting for electoral justice and upholding the democratic values that are the foundation of our beloved Sierra Leone. Together, we will continue to strive for a transparent and accountable electoral process that reflects the true voice of the people.”
