Freetown, 8 September 2026 — The Government of Sierra Leone has announced new pump prices for petrol and diesel, effective immediately from today, 8 September 2026.
According to a public notice issued by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, petrol will now sell at NLe40.00 per litre and diesel at NLe45.00 per litre.
The ministry explained that global petroleum prices have continued to rise, driven in part by the ongoing conflict involving Iran and its impact on international oil markets. Under the current pricing formula, the full pass-through prices would have been NLe41.04 per litre for petrol and NLe46.76 per litre for diesel.
The government will absorb the difference through subsidies to shield consumers from the full impact of the increase.
In recent days, several Oil Marketing Companies reduced or stopped sales at filling stations, leading to fuel shortages and long queues. The new prices are intended to restore normal supply and ensure the availability of petroleum products across the country.
The government has also pledged additional support to maintain current Waka Fine public transport fares. Waka Fine fares will not increase as a result of the new pump prices. The government will cover the extra fuel cost to protect commuters from an immediate rise in public transport fares.
Officials said the government is accelerating measures to strengthen its role in the petroleum supply chain, including importation, storage and wholesale supply. These steps are aimed at improving fuel security, strengthening market stability and reducing the country’s vulnerability to future external supply and price shocks.
The notice carries the official approval of the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.
