The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the esteemed University of Sierra Leone (USL), Professor Lawrence Kamara, has tendered his resignation.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, during a press briefing held at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in New England Ville, Freetown, on Tuesday, February 6th, 2023.
Dr. Wurie disclosed that the Ministry has accepted Prof. Kamara’s decision, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the university.
This development presents an opportunity to seek an internationally renowned scholar to serve as the Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal until a permanent replacement is appointed. The aim is to inject fresh perspectives and initiatives to enhance performance management and leadership at the university.
However, recent events have stirred controversy within the university community.
The dissolved University Court announced the approval of Prof. Mohamed Samai on January 25th, in accordance with the University Act. This decision directly challenges the recognition of Prof. Kamara as the Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal of USL.
In response, the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education is poised to launch an immediate investigation into the issues surrounding the former Court.
The unfolding situation underscores the critical need for transparency and stability within Sierra Leone’s higher education institutions.
