Kambia District, Sierra Leone— Several people are feared dead following a tragic accident on Thursday at the Rokupr Town Wharf, where a delivery vehicle reportedly lost control and plunged into the Rokupr River.
The incident occurred at the bustling wharf, a key commercial and transport hub in the town, as traders, transport operators and residents went about their daily activities.
Witnesses said the vehicle appeared to suffer brake failure, causing the driver to lose control before the truck veered off the edge of the wharf and crashed into the river.
The sudden accident triggered panic at the scene, with bystanders raising alarms as the vehicle sank.
Community members and local volunteers quickly organised rescue efforts, entering the river in an attempt to save occupants and recover victims.
By the time of reporting, at least two bodies had been retrieved from the water. Search and recovery operations are continuing amid concerns that additional victims may still be trapped inside the submerged vehicle.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the total number of casualties or the identities of those involved. However, initial assessments point to a mechanical fault, with brake failure cited as the likely cause.
The incident has plunged the Rokupr community into mourning, as families of the victims gathered at the wharf and surrounding areas, anxiously awaiting news. Residents described the tragedy as devastating, calling for improved safety measures at the busy riverside facility.
Further updates are expected as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
