A wave of violence swept through the Westend of Freetown on Sunday, November 26, 2023, as unidentified individuals launched a brazen attack on the military armoury in Wilberforce, accompanied by forceful assaults on detention facilities of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service and the Sierra Leone Police.
In the aftermath of the disturbing events, marked by sporadic heavy gunfire, the true motives and facts behind the attempted takeover are now under intense scrutiny by the police. Tragically, some military personnel and a Correctional Service officer fell victim to the assailants, losing their lives in the process.
Expressing condemnation for these “premeditated violent acts,” the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) issued a statement, signed by Umaru Napoleon Koroma Esq., National Secretary General urging the swift investigation and prosecution of all collaborators and perpetrators.
The party, committed to upholding the democratic values of the nation, commended the rapid response of security forces, including the Sierra Leone Police, Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, and the Sierra Leone Correctional Service, in bringing the situation under control.
“The bravery and gallantry exhibited by these forces in quelling the attacks and subduing the assailants deserve our gratitude,” emphasized the SLPP Secretariat.
Reiterating the sentiments conveyed by SLPP Leader and President of the Republic, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, on November 26, 2023, the party called upon all Sierra Leoneans to embrace peace and unity during this challenging time.
The SLPP appealed to supporters and citizens alike to unite for the collective well-being of Sierra Leone.
Amidst heightened security concerns, the SLPP advised citizens to remain vigilant while assuring confidence that the security forces would continue robustly protecting the nation’s peace and security.
In a final gesture of sympathy, the SLPP extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those brutally murdered in defense of the nation, wishing the departed souls perfect peace.
