During the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press conference on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Sierra Leone’s Chief Immigration Officer, Hon. Alusine Kanneh, announced significant changes to the passport application process.
“All Lebanese living in Sierra Leone and who want our passport would no longer be allowed to apply remotely for passports without having their biometrics captured,” stated Hon. Alusine Kanneh, emphasizing the necessity of capturing biometric data for all applicants.
The Chief Immigration Officer further explained, “We have upgraded our passport application forms to include the NIN number. That has enhanced the security features and will now ensure that Sierra Leoneans, and not foreigners, get our passports.”
Reflecting on the improvements within the Immigration Department, Hon. Alusine Kanneh addressed past challenges, stating, “When I took over the Immigration Department, there was a problem of overcrowding, mostly caused by poor accommodation, and unauthorized volunteers who were engaged in unscrupulous activities. That is now a thing of the past.”
In response to concerns about alleged increases in airport taxes and decreased air traffic, Chernoh Bah reassured the public, stating, “I want to assure the public that the persistent claim that Airport taxes have been increased and people are not flying through our Airport is fake. The investment into our Airport is leading to benefits, and they will manifest as things unfold.”
These updates signify a concerted effort by Sierra Leonean authorities to enhance security measures and streamline immigration processes for the benefit of the nation’s citizens.
