In a recent release of the Global Peace Index (GPI) for 2024, Sierra Leone has been recognized as the 8th most peaceful country in Africa.
This ranking highlights the country’s significant progress in maintaining peace and stability, particularly amid the region’s ongoing challenges.
Leading the list of peaceful African nations, Mauritius secured the top position with a GPI score of 1.577, followed by Madagascar at 1.838, and Botswana at 1.863.
These countries, along with Sierra Leone and others in the top ten, have shown notable commitment to ensuring safety and tranquility within their borders, which has contributed to their high rankings.
Globally, the GPI report notes a troubling increase in conflicts, with 56 recorded incidents—the highest since World War II. These conflicts have involved 92 countries, marking a significant rise in international disputes.
Sierra Leone’s 66th position globally and 8th in Africa underscore the nation’s continuous efforts to promote peace and security. The GPI report reflects Sierra Leone’s advances in reducing violence and enhancing public safety, which are crucial for sustainable development and growth.
