Freetown, Sierra Leone – January 18, 2025 – In a move aimed at easing travel for citizens, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have announced a significant reduction in the number of checkpoints across the country’s districts, towns, and cities.
The decision was communicated through an official notice released late on Friday, January 17, 2025, which included a detailed list of the remaining active checkpoints for public reference.
The SLP stated that this initiative is designed to alleviate the inconvenience faced by commuters, particularly those undertaking long journeys, who have had to endure multiple stops.
“PHQ acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the proliferation of checkpoints for commuters across the country,” the notice read.
The SLP further warned that any officers found disregarding the updated guidelines would face disciplinary actions.
The increase in checkpoints was initially implemented following a failed coup attempt in November 2023, as part of heightened security measures deemed necessary at the time. During this period, commuters were often required to exit vehicles for security screenings, with provisions made for the elderly and disabled to rest during the process.
