In a national address on June 15th, 2024, President Julius Maada Bio delivered a significant national address, emphasizing the government’s commitment to national unity, peace, and electoral reform.
Speaking at State House ahead of Eid celebrations, President Bio extended his greetings to Sierra Leoneans and wished the Hajj pilgrims a safe return from Makkah.
In his address, President Bio highlighted the importance of continued national peace and cohesion, expressing gratitude for the public’s support and patience following the June 2023 elections.
He noted that his administration, in collaboration with the main opposition and other stakeholders, has undertaken a comprehensive review of the electoral process to promote inclusive governance and deepen democracy.
A key component of these efforts is the Agreement for National Unity, which has led to the formation of the Tripartite Committee on Electoral Systems Review. This committee, along with the operationalization of the Inter-Party Dialogue and the establishment of Moral Guarantors, represents significant strides toward fostering a more unified political climate.
President Bio acknowledged the crucial role of international partners in supporting these initiatives, urging them to continue their support for the Agreement for National Unity.
He reiterated his administration’s focus on building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Sierra Leone, calling on all citizens to actively engage in nation-building efforts.
The President also provided an update on the progress of the Tripartite Committee on Electoral Systems Review, noting that substantial work has been done and the committee is nearing the finalization of its recommendations. He stressed the importance of unity and warned against divisive actions, urging Sierra Leoneans to adopt the principle of “politics without bitterness.”
As the nation awaits the committee’s report, President Bio emphasized the need for electoral system reforms to strengthen democracy. He thanked diplomatic and development partners for their support and called on all political leaders to commit to peace and stability.
In closing, President Bio reaffirmed his government’s dedication to addressing citizens’ concerns and aspirations, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve economic growth, education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.
He called for collective responsibility in safeguarding democratic values and working toward a vision of a peaceful, inclusive, and thriving Sierra Leone.
“Together, our vision of an inclusive, peaceful, and thriving Sierra Leone is possible. It is a vision we all deserve,” President Bio concluded.
