Freetown, 23rd October 2025 – The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have debunked reports of an alleged mine collapse in Kumao Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District, which was said to have trapped nearly 100 youths underground.
According to the SLP, officers from the Motema Police Division visited the purported site on October 21 to investigate but found no evidence supporting the claims. The tunnels, believed to have been abandoned for some time, showed no signs of recent activity or any trapped individuals.
Following consultations with officials of the Gold Lion Mining Company and local authorities, the police confirmed that no one had been reported missing and that the area remained calm.
The police, however, advised the company to enhance its safety protocols and maintain a standby rescue team to respond swiftly to any genuine emergencies.
Representatives from the company, including its Human Resources and Public Relations Officers, alongside community leaders, have been invited to make official statements at the police station.
The Motema Police Division assured that continuous monitoring of the area will be maintained, reaffirming that the reported incident was a false alarm and that normalcy prevails in the community.
