The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority, *Ibrahim Brima Swaray* has confirmed a record collection of 125 Billion old Leones on Friday 15th September 2023.
It could be recalled that over the past two weeks, Ibrahim Brima Swaray initiated extensive engagements with various stakeholders in the taxpaying community *including Financial Institutions, Mining Companies, General Merchandise, the hospitality industry, MDAs and Insurance Companies, the Sierra Leone Importers Association to familiarise and goad them into complying with the tax laws of Sierra Leone.*
Essentially, deadline for the filing of PAYE (Pay As You Earn) and Withholding tax for August is on the 15th September 2023. The trigger on the record collection (125 Billion) could be largely attributed to the series of engagements held by the Commissioner General in the last two weeks with members of the Business Community. Moreover, Swaray has instituted a number of staff realignment which he consider very key in the revenue collection drive. It is apparently clear that when you compare August collection to September, one will realize a massive difference in the amount collected. September is much more higher to August, reinforcing the critical nature of tax education in revenue mobilization.
Ibrahim Brima Swaray has on many occasions stated his approach on revenue generation within which tax education is key. He seems to be clear on how he plans to achieve the revenue to GDP ratio of 21% in the coming years. The Commissioner General has always insisted that a sovereign state should prioritize and increase domestic revenue mobilization to cater for it’s basic needs. He aims to achieve this in his time at the National Revenue Authority.
