In a recent press release dated September 4, 2023, the Ministry of Employment, Labour, and Social Security unveiled its ambitious plan to conduct a sweeping Integrated Labour Inspection across all establishments, industries, and workplaces throughout the nation.
This comprehensive evaluation is scheduled to span from Wednesday, September 6th, to Friday, September 15th, 2023, with the primary objective of assessing compliance with labor laws, placing particular emphasis on key areas of concern.
The inspection will encompass the following pivotal aspects:
1. Gender Equality in Workplaces: The ministry is committed to ensuring workplaces maintain gender equality, offering equal opportunities and treatment to all employees, irrespective of gender.
2. Occupational Safety and Health: The inspection will rigorously evaluate safety and health measures in workplaces to guarantee the well-being and security of employees.
3. Industrial Relations: A meticulous evaluation of the relationships between employers and employees will be undertaken, which includes assessing collective bargaining mechanisms and dispute resolution processes.
4. Wages and Remuneration: The ministry aims to ensure that workers receive fair wages and compensation in accordance with national regulations, ensuring economic justice.
5. Work Permits (for Foreign Workers/Expatriate Staff): The status and documentation of foreign workers and expatriate staff will be reviewed to confirm legal compliance, safeguarding the rights of all employees.
This initiative strongly aligns with the core mission of the Ministry of Employment, which encompasses the formulation and execution of employment and labor market policies, the promotion of occupational safety and health standards, management of industrial relations, conducting wage and labor inspections, and advancing gender equality within workplaces.
Furthermore, this initiative is in full compliance with the World Bank Development Policy Operations (DPO3), reflecting the government’s unwavering commitment to international labor management standards and best practices.
The Ministry earnestly encourages all establishments, industries, and workplaces to fully cooperate during this comprehensive Integrated Labour Inspection. This concerted effort aims to elevate Sierra Leone’s labor environment, promote equitable employment practices, and ensure the overall well-being of all workers.
