Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has officially released the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
The announcement was made today by Minister Conrad Sackey on national broadcaster SLBC.
According to the results, Roseline Mariam Jalloh of the Modern Academy Senior School of Excellence emerged as the best-performing candidate. She scored 4 A’s, 3 B2’s, and 2 B3’s, earning a grade point average of 1.78.
The second-best performance came from Rosel Hafua Denis of the International School in Freetown, who obtained 6 A’s, 2 B’s, and 1 C5, with a grade point average of 1.89.
However, the general performance in English Language was described as alarming. Only 11.77 percent of candidates obtained a credit or better, while 63 percent failed the subject – one of the worst performances in the history of the exam.
Despite the challenges, Kamboi Secondary School in Kenema stood out as the best-performing school for 2025. All of its candidates secured at least five credits, including English Language and/or Mathematics.
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is a standardized test administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) across five English-speaking countries: Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and The Gambia.
In Sierra Leone, the exam is taken by final-year senior secondary school students and serves as the gateway to higher education. Candidates are assessed in core subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, and Science, alongside electives. Results are graded from A1 (excellent) to F9 (fail), with a credit pass (C6 or better) required for university admission.
The WASSCE plays a critical role in shaping the academic and career paths of thousands of Sierra Leonean students each year, making its release one of the most anticipated events in the education calendar.
