Freetown, Sierra Leone – Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has presented the highly anticipated Freetown Cable Car Feasibility Study to Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.
The comprehensive report, which took two years to complete, outlines plans for an innovative cable car mass transit network designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance mobility for underserved communities in the capital.
The study, funded by the C40 Cities Finance Facility with support from the governments of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, was implemented in collaboration with GIZ, the German International Cooperation Agency.
On a social media post, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr stated that, “I was really pleased to present the Freetown Cable Car Feasibility Study report to Vice President H.E. Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh this morning. Conducted over a 24-month period, the detailed multidimensional study was funded by C40 Cities Finance Facility…collaborating closely with the Freetown City Council.”
Launched in June 2022, the Cable Car Project is a bold step toward transforming urban transit in Freetown. The project plans to develop a 3.6km network with four stations, capable of transporting 6,000 passengers per hour.
It aims to connect disadvantaged hillside communities to the central business district, providing a quick, safe, and affordable alternative to the city’s often congested and informal transport system.
Not only is the cable car project expected to ease Freetown’s transport issues, but it also promises significant environmental benefits. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31%, helping to combat air pollution and improve public health in the city. The initiative is also projected to create 2,200 jobs during the construction phase and 70 long-term positions, contributing to local economic growth.
Vice President Jalloh’s reception of the report highlights the government’s support for the initiative, which positions Freetown as a leader in green transport solutions in West Africa. Following a successful pilot, the project could see future expansions.
The cable car, which uses detachable gondola technology, marks a first for Sierra Leone. Experts highlight that it is increasingly becoming a popular mode of transport globally, offering a unique travel experience by allowing passengers to glide above the city, while avoiding the limitations of traditional road and rail infrastructure.
This project reflects Freetown’s commitment to sustainable urban development and inclusive transport solutions that address the needs of its citizens while promoting environmental stewardship.
