Recent resignations at Radio Democracy 98.1 FM have sparked discussions on social media, prompting the Board of Directors to address the situation.
In a press statement issued today, signed by the Board Chairman, Dr. Julius Spencer, the following clarifications have been made:
- Mrs. Asmaa James, the long-serving Station Manager, resigned a month ago, expressing her wish to explore other opportunities. The Board plans to bid her a befitting farewell upon her return from abroad.
- To revitalize the station and meet media sector challenges, the Board hired Mr. Kakpindi Jamiru, a seasoned consultant, on a six-month contract as the interim Station Manager. He brings a wealth of broadcasting experience from working with Search for Common Ground and BBC Media Action.
- The Board will advertise the Station Manager position within the six-month period and appoint a substantive Station Manager through a transparent process.
- The Consultant Station Manager, Mr. Kakpindi Jamiru, officially began his work on August 1st.
- In addition to Mrs. Asmaa James, Ms. Mabel Kabba (Deputy Station Manager) and Ms. Kadija Bangura (Producer) have also resigned to pursue other opportunities.
The Board assures the public that Radio Democracy is not in crisis. Rather, the station is undergoing a review and reorganization to remain effective in its mission of advocating for democracy, good governance, and human rights in Sierra Leone.
They add that Radio Democracy will continue providing a platform for all voices and fostering discussions on national concerns.
