Freetown, Sierra Leone – Hawa Hunt, a 43-year-old dual citizen of Canada and Sierra Leone, has been released from detention after an appeal by Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Bio.
Hunt was arrested on December 22, 2024, following the release of a video in which she openly criticized President Julius Maada Bio and the First Lady.
Hunt’s arrest occurred shortly after her arrival in Freetown to participate in a popular reality TV show, sparking widespread outrage and calls for her release. Concerns for her health grew during her detention, with international media highlighting the situation.
In a heartfelt appeal during a live Facebook session, Dr. Fatima Bio called for Hunt’s release, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and unity within the nation. Her intervention appears to have played a critical role in securing Hunt’s release, underscoring the influence of advocacy and dialogue in addressing such issues.
Hunt’s release has been welcomed by supporters and human rights advocates, who view it as a positive step toward upholding democratic principles in Sierra Leone.
