The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have firmly denied allegations suggesting they plan to take control of the country if the 2024 elections are disrupted by violence.
The claims, attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), were addressed in a press release on Friday, August 23, 2024.
In their statement, GAF clarified that they have never held a press conference or publicly declared any intentions of staging a coup.
The military emphasized that their role is to support the Ghana Police Service when requested, and this does not imply a desire to overthrow the government.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for GAF, stated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup. We are committed to preventing and resisting any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”
The release also called on civil society groups and the media to refrain from using GAF’s name to escalate political tensions.
GAF urged all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the upcoming December 2024 elections, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and allowing citizens to engage in lawful activities safely and freely.
