The Freetown City Council (FCC) has extended warm Yuletide greetings and best wishes for a prosperous and peaceful 2025 to residents of the municipality. However, the Council has also issued a stern warning about sanitation issues and compliance with event regulations during the festive season.
In a statement issued today and signed by FCC’s Chief Administrator, Raman Tom Farmar, the Council expressed concern over the unsanitary conditions observed in front of business premises and along major streets.
“It has come to our attention that the frontages of business houses, shops, welding shops, and timber shops along main streets are being left in deplorable states,” FCC stated, citing a violation of the Council’s Statutory Nuisance Byelaws of 2010.
The FCC reminded residents and business owners that they are responsible for cleaning the gutters, drainages, and frontages of their premises. “Maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility,” they emphasized.
The Council also criticized the organizers of street carnivals and cultural masquerades for failing to clean up after their events. “We have noted with disdain that these events leave our streets in very filthy conditions. This behavior is unacceptable and contravenes our bylaws,” FCC stated.
The FCC has outlined strict measures to address these issues. Organizers of street events must seek permission from the Council and the Sierra Leone Police before proceeding. This, according to the FCC, will enable logistical and personnel arrangements for post-event clean-up.
“Failure to comply will result in the closure of events, confiscation of amplifiers and public address systems, and legal action against the offenders,” they warned.
The FCC is appealing to the general public to cooperate in keeping Freetown clean. “We urge everyone to support our efforts in maintaining a properly sanitized municipality. Together, we can make Freetown a healthier and more welcoming city,” the Council concluded.
This notice serves as both a festive greeting and a call to action, reminding all stakeholders of their civic duties during this holiday season.
