Today, on Friday, March 29, 2023, the late Lamin Bangura, former Head Coach of Ports Authority and a former Leone Stars Defender, will be laid to rest at the SLFA Academy, Kingtom cemetery.
In a press release issued yesterday, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) stated, “Football Family is invited to the memorial service of the late Lamin Bangura, former Head Coach of Ports Authority and a former Leone Stars Defender, who tragically passed away on Tuesday, the 26th of March, 2024, in a car accident.”
The memorial service will be held tomorrow, Friday, the 29th of March, 2024, at the SLFA Academy Grounds, Kingtom, Freetown, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Bangura’s untimely demise occurred after a bus he was traveling in collided with a stationary vehicle in Konta Line in Sierra Leone’s Northern Province on Tuesday.
Until his tragic passing, Bangura served as the head coach of the Sierra Leonean football club Ports Authority FC.
The football legend, along with his crew members and Ports Authority FC players, was en route from the capital Freetown to Kenema in the Eastern Province for a match against Kahunla Rangers FC when the accident transpired.
Bangura succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday at a hospital in Freetown.
Six players of Ports Authority FC sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident and were promptly transported to a hospital in Freetown for treatment.
During his illustrious career as a player, Bangura, a formidable centre-back, played a pivotal role in helping Sierra Leone qualify for the 1994 and 1996 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
