Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has officially announced the results of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The results were released on Monday, November 18, 2024, by Education Minister Conrad Sackey.
The BECE, administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), is a crucial assessment for Junior High School students in Sierra Leone. It serves as both a certification of junior secondary education and a gateway to senior secondary education.
This year, 126,703 students from 1,833 schools participated in the examination, conducted in July. Of the candidates, 61,380 were male and 65,116 female, reflecting a continued effort toward gender parity in education.
However, 5,578 students did not sit for the exam, including 5,545 who were marked absent across all subjects. Additionally, the results of 879 candidates have been withheld by WAEC pending further investigation.
The Ministry confirmed that results for 125,824 candidates, inclusive of absentees, were received from WAEC on November 14, 2024. These results will play a significant role in determining the next steps for students as they transition to senior secondary school.
The BECE remains a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s education system, underscoring the importance of equitable access to education and consistent oversight to ensure its integrity.
