Freetown, Sierra Leone – 23rd April 2026: The Honourable Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, today led a high-level delegation comprising Chief Justices, distinguished judges, legal scholars, and eminent personalities from the ECOWAS Commission on an excursion to some of the country’s most notable heritage and conservation sites.
The delegation visited the renowned Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, an internationally recognized conservation centre committed to the protection and rehabilitation of endangered chimpanzees. The visit offered delegates a unique opportunity to experience Sierra Leone’s rich biodiversity and learn about ongoing environmental conservation efforts.
The tour also included a visit to the Peace Museum, situated at the former premises of the Special Court for Sierra Leone. As a powerful symbol of justice, reconciliation, and national healing, the museum provided a reflective insight into Sierra Leone’s post-conflict journey and enduring commitment to peace.
Speaking during the excursion, Chief Justice Kamanda, who also serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Judicial Council, described the experience as both “exciting and profoundly meaningful.”
He expressed pride in hosting the distinguished delegation and in showcasing Sierra Leone’s unique blend of natural heritage and judicial legacy.
One member of the delegation, a judge from Cape Verde, highlighted the distinctiveness of the visit, noting that it was her first time experiencing a facility dedicated as a “Peace Museum.”
She commended Sierra Leone for preserving its history in a manner that fosters education, reflection, and peacebuilding.
The motorcade, escorted by a strong police presence, attracted public attention as it moved through the city, underscoring the importance of the visit and the presence of high-ranking judicial figures from across the West African sub-region.
The excursion forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regional judicial cooperation, promote cultural exchange, and deepen appreciation of Sierra Leone’s contributions to peace, justice, and environmental conservation.
