Freetown, Sierra Leone – Popular Sierra Leonean rapper Alhaji Amadu Bah, widely known as Boss LAJ, was arrested on Monday while attempting to travel to The Gambia, his lawyer Madieu Sesay has confirmed.
According to reports, the artist was detained at Lungi International Airport or en route, then taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Freetown before being transferred under police escort to Bo in the Southern Province.
The arrest stems from a bench warrant issued by Magistrate Solomon James Brima of Bo Magistrate Court No. 1 on Friday, March 27, 2026. LAJ and co-accused Ibrahim Koroma (also known as Prezo Koroma) failed to appear in court to answer charges of using abusive and insulting language against Thomas Baio, the Mayor of Kenema City.
The alleged remarks were reportedly made during a stage performance in Bo. Mayor Baio was present in court when the warrant was issued, and the case has been adjourned to Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
LAJ’s legal team, led by Madieu Sesay Esq. of Madieu Sesay & Associates, has strongly contested the process. In a formal letter dated March 27, the lawyers argued that their client was never officially served with any summons or notified of the proceedings, claiming they only learned of the matter through social media. They maintain that no lawful service was effected, raising questions about the validity of the warrant.
LAJ, a pioneering figure in Sierra Leonean hip-hop since the late 2000s, rose to fame with hits like “Moni Na Bank” and is known for his influence in the local music scene through his label Red Flag Muzik (RFM). He has had a turbulent past, including a 2023 conviction for robbery with violence and assault at a Freetown petrol station, for which he served time before his release in early 2024. He is also recognized as a Peace Ambassador.
The latest development has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with fans and observers debating issues of due process, celebrity accountability, and freedom of expression in the entertainment industry.
As of Tuesday, LAJ remains in custody in Bo as authorities proceed with the case.
