Sierra Leonean-Liberian recording artist Alonzo Teah Abasi, better known by his stage name “Alonzo,” walked free on Tuesday after prosecutors in Liberia formally withdrew all drug-trafficking charges against him.
The decision brings an end to a high-profile four-month case that began with his dramatic arrest at the Bo Waterside border crossing on August 7, 2025.
A statement from Alonzo’s management team said authorities concluded an exhaustive investigation and found no basis to proceed, fully clearing the artist of any wrongdoing.
The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) had accused the musician of attempting to smuggle 844 grams of Methcathinone, a synthetic stimulant valued at more than $8,400 on the street. hidden inside a vehicle door panel. At the time, the agency described the seizure as the first known attempt to bring the substance into Liberia, drawing widespread media coverage across West Africa.
With the charges now dropped, Alonzo is expected to return to his music career after what his team called “an unfortunate and baseless ordeal.”
No further details about the investigation or the reasons for dismissing the case have been made public by the LDEA.
