Freetown — The National Minerals Agency (NMA) will host Sierra Leone’s first PanAfGeo training course on geohazards and mine environmental management from 7–12 December 2026 in Freetown.
The announcement follows preparatory discussions with an international delegation led by Professor Stanisław Wołkowicz of the Polish Geological Institute, alongside experts Giuseppe Delmonaco and Dr Francesco Traversa from Italy’s Geological Survey (ISPRA).
The programme is expected to attract approximately 35 geoscientists and five international trainers from Africa and Europe. Participants will gain practical experience through field assessments of landslide-prone areas in Freetown, geotechnical conditions at amphibolite quarries, and slope stability and waste management at an active hematite mine.
The training is part of PanAfGeo+ (2025–2029), an EU-supported initiative aimed at strengthening geological expertise and technical capacity across Africa.
The initiative is expected to enhance participants’ skills in identifying geohazards and improving environmental management in mining activities.
