Freetown – The Government of Sierra Leone has officially declared Tuesday, 25th August 2026 a nationwide public holiday in observance of the Feast of Moulid-Un-Nabi (also known as Mawlid al-Nabi), which commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
A public notice issued from State House, Tower Hill, Freetown on Monday, 24th August 2026, informed the general public that the feast will be observed on that day and has therefore been declared a public holiday across the country.
This means government offices, public schools, and many private businesses are expected to remain closed, allowing Muslims and other Sierra Leoneans to mark the occasion.
About Moulid-Un-Nabi
Moulid-Un-Nabi is one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar. It falls on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Hijri calendar. In 2026, this corresponds to 25 August in Sierra Leone and several other countries.
The day is traditionally observed with:
– Special prayers and religious lectures
– Reflections on the life, character, and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
– Acts of charity and community support
– In some areas, processions, recitations of praises (qasidas), and communal gatherings
Sierra Leone has long recognised Moulid-Un-Nabi as a national public holiday, reflecting the country’s significant Muslim population and its tradition of religious inclusivity.
Citizens are advised to take note of the holiday and plan accordingly. Essential services such as hospitals, security, and other critical operations will continue as usual.
