Freetown, April 29, 2025 — Sierra Leone’s National Public Health Agency (NPHA) has confirmed 100 new cases of Mpox and two additional deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 961 since the outbreak began earlier this year. The cumulative death toll now stands at nine.
According to the latest data, 663 cases remain active, while 289 individuals have recovered. The gender distribution of confirmed cases includes 517 males and 444 females.
The Western Area, encompassing both urban and rural districts, continues to be the epicenter of the outbreak. In response, the government has established four treatment centers in Freetown and launched a vaccination campaign targeting frontline health workers and high-risk populations. Over 1,000 individuals have been vaccinated, utilizing doses provided by the World Health Organization and international partners.
Health officials emphasize the importance of early detection and public cooperation in curbing the spread of the virus. Residents are urged to report suspected cases by calling the toll-free emergency line at 117.
Mpox is a viral disease related to smallpox, characterized by fever, skin lesions, and other flu-like symptoms. The virus spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials.
The NPHA continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to adhere to preventive measures, including regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with infected persons, and seeking medical attention if symptoms arise.
