Freetown, Sierra Leone – Dr. Denis Moinina Sandy, Minister of Works and Infrastructure, is at the center of a growing legal controversy involving claims of document forgery and judicial misconduct.
The case, which has sparked public concern, centers on allegations that Dr. Sandy fraudulently secured a divorce from his wife, Mary Kai Sandy.
Court filings reveal that Betts & Berewa Solicitors, a prominent legal firm in Freetown, is accusing unknown individuals of using its name without authorization to obtain a Decree Absolute on November 27, 2024.
The firm is seeking NLE 2.5 million (approximately $100,000) in damages, citing severe damage to its reputation and professional relationships.
Adding to the gravity of the matter, a letter issued by Michael & Michael Solicitors, acting on behalf of Mrs. Sandy, describes the decree as being procured through questionable and potentially illegal means.
According to the letter, Mrs. Sandy was never personally served with divorce documents, and a search of court records failed to show any official documentation of the proceedings.
The Judiciary of Sierra Leone has reportedly launched an internal investigation into the case. If the allegations are confirmed, they could implicate a sitting government minister in forgery and abuse of the legal system, raising serious questions about accountability and integrity within public office.
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has not yet issued an official statement.
