Led by prominent activist Edmond Abu, around two hundred civil society organizations in Sierra Leone took a stand on Monday, presenting a comprehensive five-point position paper to the Chairman and Clerk of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Works and Public Assets.
Acting on behalf of the citizens, these organizations voiced their concerns and demands regarding toll gates and public assets.
In their position paper, the organizations called for the removal of one of the toll gates situated along the Wellington Masiaka Highway.
They urged a thorough review of the agreement, citing Article 22.15, and demanded that CRSG (Civil Roads and State Gateways) vacate all blockades obstructing the three alternative routes.
Furthermore, the civil society groups insisted on immediate independent investigations, the appointment of an independent engineer, and the release of an auditor’s report on the agreement. They staunchly opposed any fee hikes and pressed for the maintenance of existing fees until a transparent investigation is completed.
The position paper was formally received by Hon. Bashiru Silkie, Deputy Leader of Government Business and Chairman of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Works and Public Assets, at his office within the Parliament Building in Tower Hill, Freetown.
Despite the submission of the position paper, uncertainty looms over whether and when the proposed fee increase will be presented to Parliament for ratification, and whether any amendments will be made to address the concerns raised by civil society organizations and citizens alike.
