Graduates of UNIMTECH University from the class of 2023 are expressing their frustration after the institution withheld their certificates and imposed an unexpected fee of NLe500 (Le500,000).
This unexpected move is hindering their plans to pursue job opportunities and further education.
According to the university administration, the official certificates will not be released until six months after graduation due to a decision made by the university senate.
Additionally, the fee is being charged as a penalty for graduates who left the graduation ceremony early, a step the university says is aimed at discouraging such behavior in the future.
Dr. Alhaji B. Kamara, the Registrar of the university, stated that certificates would be ready by October 2024, but only after the graduates pay the imposed fee.
The graduates argue that overcrowding and unsafe conditions at the ceremony forced them to leave early, and they view the fee as an unfair financial burden.
They are calling on the university to reconsider its decision, as the withheld certificates are essential for their career and academic plans.
This ongoing issue has left many graduates in limbo, awaiting a resolution.
