Sierra Leone’s U-20 team, the Shooting Stars, faced a disappointing 2-0 defeat against defending champions Senegal in the U-20 WAFU Zone A final at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia this evening.
Goals in the 13th and 24th minutes of the first half sealed the victory for Senegal, as Sierra Leone struggled to make a comeback.
Despite the loss, there was a silver lining for the Shooting Stars. Forward Momoh Kamara was awarded both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament honors, highlighting his outstanding individual performance throughout the competition.
Sierra Leone’s journey in the tournament was marked by impressive performances. They topped Group A with victories over hosts Liberia and Guinea-Bissau, and a 0-0 draw against Guinea. The team then secured a 3-0 win over Gambia in the semi-finals.
Both Sierra Leone and Senegal have qualified for the 2025 U-20 African Nations Cup (AFCON), marking the first time Sierra Leone has reached this stage.
The 2025 AFCON will also serve as the African qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, set to take place in Chile. Gambia claimed the third spot in the tournament.
