Freetown, Sierra Leone – Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has ignited public debate by predicting that Sierra Leone’s next president will be younger than 45 years old and will continue President Julius Maada Bio’s focus on youth development.
In a social media post earlier today, Sengeh stated: “The Next President of Sierra Leone will be less than 45 years old and will work for the youth as Julius Maada Bio has started!”
Context and Reactions
President Julius Maada Bio, who turned 62 yesterday (May 12, 2026), is in his second and final term following his 2023 re-election. The next presidential election is scheduled for 2028 under the country’s two-term constitutional limit.
Sengeh, himself 40 years old, has long championed youth empowerment. His comments are seen as a call for young Sierra Leoneans to prepare for future leadership in politics, business, and innovation.
The statement drew a swift response from First Lady Fatima Maada Bio, who cautioned against adding personal interpretations to the President’s remarks. She noted that President Bio had spoken more generally about the next leader being “a Man or a Woman,” without referencing age.

The Chief Minister’s post highlights the administration’s achievements in education through the Free Quality School Education programme, increased enrollment, higher education expansion, and improvements in healthcare access for young people and families.
The remarks have fueled early speculation about potential successors ahead of the 2028 polls and raised questions about a possible generational shift in Sierra Leonean leadership.
