In a recent development, Sierra Leone’s performance on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) 2024 Scorecard has exhibited a decline.
The country managed to pass 10 out of 20 indicators, as opposed to 11 in the previous year, 2023.
This shift in performance is marked by both notable achievements and concerning setbacks.
Sierra Leone has excelled in indicators such as Land Rights, Employment Opportunities, Political Rights, Civil Liberties, Control of Corruption, Rule of Law, and Freedom of Information. However, the achievements in these areas have been offset by failures in Fiscal Policy, Inflation, Trade Policy, Government Effectiveness, Health Expenditures, and Natural Resource Protection.
The fluctuating performance on the MCC Scorecard is raising concerns about the sustainability of the positive trend seen in 2021 and 2022 when Sierra Leone managed to pass 13 indicators.
This significant update was presented to President Julius Maada Bio on November 6, 2023, by U.S. Ambassador Bryan Hunt.
The MCC, which was established by the U.S. Congress in January 2004, works in collaboration with the world’s poorest countries that are committed to principles of just and democratic governance, economic freedom, and investing in the well-being of their populations.
