The National Union of Sierra Leonean Students in the Russian Federation (NUSS-RF) has voiced its deep disappointment and frustration over the delayed payment of annual stipends, which are essential for their survival and academic success.
Thr students made this frustration known in a press release issued today, 17 June 2024.
Despite repeated assurances from authorities responsible for disbursing these funds, students have not received their stipends since the academic year began last September.
This delay has left many students struggling to meet their basic academic and financial needs.
“The stipend is crucial for supporting our academic pursuits,” NUSS-RF stated. “Its delay is causing undue suffering, as students are already grappling with living expenses, accommodation payments, medical care, and feeding.”
The union emphasized that the financial challenges have led to starvation, health problems, and an inability to meet basic accommodation requirements.
“Since the start of the academic year, we have held countless meetings and sent numerous letters and reminders to the authorities in charge of student welfare,” the they added. “To date, no positive response has been received, and the academic year ends in a few weeks.”
NUSS-RF is now demanding immediate action from the Sierra Leonean government to resolve the issue and ensure timely disbursement of stipends.
The union has pledged to continue advocating through media agencies and is prepared to conduct peaceful protests until the matter is addressed.
“We will not stop until our members receive the compensation they are entitled to,” the students affirmed.
