Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Police have officially confirmed the release of Dutch journalist Sophie, who was previously detained on allegations of espionage.
In a press statement issued today, the police informed the public that Sophie underwent interrogation as part of their investigation and was subsequently released after complying with the process.
“Following her compliance with the interrogation, Ms Van Leeuwen was released to continue her work,” the statement reads.
The statement however did not provide further details on the nature of the allegations or the specific reasons for her detention.
Sophie’s arrest had raised concerns, especially as it coincided with international scrutiny over reports of Sierra Leone allegedly harboring European drug kingpin Jos Leijdekkers, who is wanted by Dutch authorities.
While the police have assured the public that due process was followed, the incident has sparked discussions about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in Sierra Leone.
