Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) and the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation (MOCTI) have partnered with ELCOME (SL) Ltd. to provide high-speed internet connectivity to educational institutions across Sierra Leone.
The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure equal access for students nationwide.
The signing ceremony, chaired by MTHE’s Permanent Secretary, Mohamed Sheik Kargbo, was hailed as a milestone in advancing digital learning.
Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, emphasized the project’s alignment with the government’s “Big Five Game Changers” agenda, particularly in the areas of technology and infrastructure.
Hussain Sharaffdeen, Managing Director of ELCOME (SL) Ltd., reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ensuring no university is left behind in the digital transformation process. He noted that widespread internet access would equip students with the necessary tools to excel in their education.
Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, Madam Salima Bah, described the MoU as a strong commitment to expanding internet accessibility, echoing President Bio’s vision of making internet and mobile services a fundamental right in Sierra Leone.
Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education, welcomed the agreement, noting its significance in addressing challenges in the education sector.
She credited President Julius Maada Bio for initiating discussions with Starlink, which paved the way for this groundbreaking collaboration.
This partnership is expected to revolutionize the learning environment in Sierra Leone, enhancing digital infrastructure and improving educational outcomes for students across the country.
