Makeni, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has extended its Smart City Project to Makeni, North-East Region, with the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at key locations across the city.
The initiative, first conceived in 2014, has been championed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, who accelerated its implementation upon assuming office.
Similar installations have already been completed in the Western Area and in Bo, Southern Region.
According to the SLP, the CCTV rollout is aimed at enhancing public safety and strengthening proactive policing through advanced technology.
The cameras are equipped with inbuilt solar panels, high-capacity storage, and the capability to record video and capture still images.
The project forms part of IGP Sellu’s broader reform agenda to transform the SLP from a “Force” into a “Service”. Other reform measures include the ongoing review of the Police Act of 1964, the strengthening of the Complaints, Discipline and Internal Investigations Department, and the introduction of targeted training programmes to equip officers for emerging global security challenges.
Plans are underway to expand the Smart City Project to Kenema in the Eastern Region and Port Loko in the North-West Region.
Residents of Makeni have expressed their gratitude for the new surveillance system, describing it as a welcome measure to improve security for both lives and property.
