Freetown, July 12, 2024 – In a bid to curb rampant deforestation, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has announced a decisive ban on timber logging and transportation.
The suspension, originally set for June 1, 2024, will now be enforced from July 12 to October 31, 2024.
This seasonal measure aims to mitigate the severe environmental impacts of extensive logging activities in the country.
“This ban is crucial for addressing the environmental challenges we face,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry emphasized the importance of collaboration among all relevant Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and stakeholders to ensure the effective enforcement of the ban during the rainy season.
“We urge all parties to cooperate fully in enforcing this suspension,” they added. “Any compliance issues should be directed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for immediate action.”
