Freetown, April 5, 2025 – The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has announced a temporary suspension of the free toll line 116, a crucial hotline for reporting cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
The service will be unavailable for one week, with normal operations resuming on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
According to the Ministry, the pause is necessary to enhance the system and improve feedback mechanisms for survivors and callers.
“For the past five years, the 116 hotline has provided uninterrupted service,” said Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi. “This transition will allow us to make the service even better and ensure greater efficiency in responding to cases.”
During the temporary shutdown, the Ministry has provided an alternative contact number for emergencies.
“We understand the importance of uninterrupted access to reporting, which is why we have set up a temporary helpline at +232 76 602 658,” Dr. Mahoi stated.
The Ministry apologized for any inconvenience caused and reassured the public that maintaining access to SGBV services remains a top priority. Updates on the status of the 116 hotline will be provided as needed.
