The National Public Health Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has announced measures to ensure the safe return of Hajj pilgrims from Saudi Arabia, amidst reports of COVID-19-related deaths among the group.
“We are in constant communication with our medical team in Saudi Arabia,” stated Brig. Gen. Prof. Foday Sahr, Executive Director of the National Public Health Agency in a press release issued on 4 July 2024.
“A dedicated Technical Working Group (TWG) has been established to oversee the situation.”
Upon arrival, the pilgrims will disembark in staggered groups to prevent overcrowding. They will also undergo mandatory COVID-19 screening procedures.
“This is a critical step to ensure everyone’s safety,” added Sahr.
The returning pilgrims and their support team will be required to self-isolate at home and adhere to all public health measures, including maintaining social distancing, for seven days.
“Critically ill individuals will be admitted to the Lungi Government Hospital or the 34 Military Hospital as needed,” Sahr noted.
An emergency response plan is in place to manage any potential surge in cases, with adequate resources including personal protective equipment (PPE), testing kits, and isolation facilities.
“We are prepared to handle any situation that arises,” Sahr assured.
The National Public Health Agency remains committed to the health and safety of all returning pilgrims and the general public.
“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated,” concluded Sahr.
