Freetown, Sierra Leone – March 6, 2026 – In a move to honor the global celebration of women’s achievements and rights, the Sierra Leonean government has officially declared Monday, March 9th, 2026, as a public holiday nationwide.
This decision comes as International Women’s Day falls on Sunday, March 8th, prompting the observance to be shifted to the following day.
According to a public notice issued from State House in Freetown, the declaration aims to allow the general public to fully participate in the commemorations.
The notice, signed and dated March 6th, 2026, reads: “The General Public is hereby informed that the International Women’s Day will be observed on Sunday, 8th March 2026. Accordingly, Monday, 9th March 2026, will be a public holiday nationwide.”
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a United Nations-recognized event that highlights the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while calling for accelerated gender parity. In Sierra Leone, the day often features events such as marches, seminars, and community gatherings focused on empowering women and addressing issues like gender-based violence, education, and economic inclusion.
This holiday declaration aligns with Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality, as outlined in national policies and international commitments. Government offices, schools, and many businesses are expected to close on March 9th, giving citizens an opportunity to reflect on progress and challenges in women’s rights.
As Sierra Leone continues to build a more inclusive society, such observances serve as a reminder of the vital role women play in national development.
