Freetown — The Freetown City Council (FCC) has stepped in with emergency relief for families displaced by a devastating fire that ripped through Congo Town on 27 June.
The fire, believed to have been triggered by an electrical malfunction, completely destroyed seven homes and partially damaged nine others at 3D Off Main Road, leaving many residents without shelter and basic necessities.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr visited the scene shortly after the incident, expressing deep sympathy to the victims and pledging the Council’s ongoing support as they recover.
In follow-up action, the FCC partnered with Caritas to distribute essential relief items, including food supplies, blankets, and assorted clothing, to help the affected families meet their immediate needs.
In a statement, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to standing by the victims throughout the rebuilding process. Officials highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in times of emergency, describing the relief operation as part of FCC’s broader mission to promote community welfare and resilience across Freetown.
