The Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has responded to a requisition notice dated May 27th, 2024, from Augustine S. Marrah and Wara Serry-Kamal, calling for an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM).
The notice, purportedly signed by several SLBA members, has prompted clarification from the association’s leadership.
In an official statement, the SLBA pointed out discrepancies in the requisition. “The attached list of members contains many names which are duplicated,” the statement noted. This issue of duplicated names raises questions about the validity of the requisition.
The SLBA highlighted that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and conference were held as scheduled on May 17th and 18th, 2024, in Kenema. “These events were conducted pursuant to the rulings of the High Court of Sierra Leone,” said the SLBA, referencing the rulings of Hon. Justice Momoh-Jah Stevens (JA) and Hon. Justice Unisa Kamara (J).
Additionally, the SLBA clarified that many members who allegedly signed the requisition attended and participated in the AGM. “A good number of members who purportedly signed the notice of requisition were present at the aforementioned conference and/or AGM,” the statement read.
The elections of new directors, carried out in accordance with the SLBA’s Memorandum and Articles of Association and the Companies Act 2009 (as amended), have ushered in a new executive team for 2024-2026. The newly elected members are:
– Tuma Adama Jabbie (Ms.) – President
– Sidikie Tommy Esq. – Vice President
– Alfred Paul Juwah Esq. – General Secretary
– Abubakarr Sidique Kamara Esq. – Assistant General Secretary
– Satto Kobba (Ms.) – Treasurer
– Yoko Mahiteh Brewah (Ms.) – Assistant Treasurer
– Alfred Kamanda Esq. – Public Relations Officer
The SLBA referred to a public notice issued on May 20th, 2024, that announced these appointments.
In expressing gratitude to the previous directors, the statement conveyed, “We express our sincere appreciation to the outgone Directors of the Michaela Eddinia Swallow executive for their dedication and service to the Association and we look forward to building on their achievements.”
The newly elected executive is preparing to convene an EGM, with further notice to be issued to the membership. The SLBA encouraged members to “show deference to one another and abide by due process.”
The statement was signed by Abubakarr Sidique Kamara, Esq., the Assistant General Secretary of the SLBA, who underscored the importance of justice and adherence to procedural integrity.
