The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a forthcoming assessment mission to Sierra Leone, scheduled from June 4 to June 7, 2024.
The mission aims to evaluate the implementation of the “Agreement for National Unity,” which was signed by the Government of Sierra Leone and the All Peoples Congress (APC) party on October 18, 2023.
“The mission will be led by Her Excellency Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia and Joint Facilitator of the Mediated Dialogue process,” stated the ECOWAS Commission in an official communication.
The delegation will include representatives from the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Office in West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the Commonwealth of Nations.
During their visit, the mission is set to hold consultations with the Committee on Electoral Systems and Management Bodies Review, the Sierra Leonean government, and the APC party. Additionally, they will engage with other key stakeholders, including the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), various stakeholders, and members of the diplomatic community.
“The ECOWAS Commission requests the support of the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone to ensure the smooth conduct of the mission,” the statement added, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts for the success of this initiative.
The ECOWAS Commission reaffirmed its highest consideration to the High Commissioner of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Abuja, underscoring the significance of this mission in fostering peace and unity in Sierra Leone.
