Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah has confirmed that His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has unequivocally pledged to honor the nation’s Constitutional term limits.
Minister Bah emphasized that President Bio has firmly stated his intention to abide by the prescribed two-term limit, dismissing any rumors or insinuations regarding a potential third term or extension of tenure.
Responding to swirling rumors on social media, Minister Bah reassured the public, affirming President Bio’s commitment to democratic principles and adherence to constitutional mandates.
Furthermore, Deputy Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, shed light on the ongoing constitutional review process, tracing its roots back to the preceding administration. Sesay assured citizens of an upcoming referendum on proposed constitutional amendments, stressing transparency and active citizen participation.
Clarifying the role of the Tripartite Committee, Deputy Minister Sesay reiterated that its primary focus lies in evaluating electoral systems and processes, distancing itself from matters concerning elections or power transitions. He emphasized that the next scheduled election is slated for 2028.
Human Rights Commissioner, Simitie Lavaly, echoed the urgency of swiftly concluding the constitutional review process.
Lavaly underscored the necessity for clear and straightforward referendum questions to facilitate citizen comprehension and engagement in the democratic process.
