A Nigerian citizen, Richard Onyekachid Idi, has been arrested in Sierra Leone after authorities seized eight pallets of cocaine at Freetown International Airport.
Idi appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura on Monday, September 23, 2024, facing multiple charges, including possession, trafficking, and transportation of illegal drugs.
The charges relate to the cocaine discovered on September 13, 2024.
During the court proceedings, state prosecutor Isaac A. Kamara presented evidence from Detective Sergeant Prince Joe Jabati of the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU), who detailed the investigation leading to Idi’s apprehension.
Defense lawyer J.T. Mansaray requested bail for Idi, citing medical concerns and the availability of credible guarantors.
In response, Magistrate Kekura ordered a medical examination to assess whether Idi can remain in custody at the correctional facility.
The case has been adjourned to Thursday, September 26, 2024, for further legal proceedings.
